Manganese Steel

Manganese steel is made by alloying steel, with 11 to 15%manganese and carbon 0.8 to 1.2% as an important content. Manganese alloy is a unique non-magnetic steel after heat treatment with best anti-wear properties. Under impact condition Manganese steel very resistive to abrasion i.e. almost two to three times its surface hardness without any increase in brittleness which results to retain its toughness.
Manganese steel alloy having 10% manganese content the steel if properly cooled will remain in austenitic steel . Proper alloying with 12-13% manganese will help to achieve better both hardness and ductility i.e at the highest points . depending on other alloying agents .Carbon plays important role in achieving the required hardness as well as ductility.
The mechanical properties of AMS vary with carbon and manganese content. As carbon is increased it becomes increasingly difficult to retain all of the carbon in solid solution, which may account for reduction in tensile strength and ductility. However, as the carbon increases above 1.2 %, the abrasion resistance increases, while, the ductility is decreases. The carbon content is usually below 1.4 % and 13 % manganese as it becomes difficult to retain its austenitic structure , which are unfavorable to strength and ductility. In the as-cast condition Manganese alloy has fair yield strength but very high tensile strength, which rises rapidly as it work hardens. Manganese alloy has been used in the crawler treads for tractors , mining industry, railway switches and crossings, cement mixers, rock crushers, and other high impact and abrasive environments
